Comcast California Fact Sheet



Comcast California is comprised of two major regions:  the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, and the Central Valley.  We have 6 DMA’s across the Northern and Central California footprint Geographically, the Bay Area region represents the western half of Northern CA (north to Santa Rosa, east to the Delta, and south to Lompoc/Santa Maria); the Central Valley represents the eastern corridor (north to Chico and south to Fresno/Visalia).

Comcast/NBCU has more than 12,000 employees in California.  More than 5,000 of them focus on technical operations, engineering, network, local customer service, public relations, government affairs, business services, ad sales, production services, marketing and other specials projects.




Approx. 2.2 million in our California Serviceable Market:


  • Approx. 1.6 million in Bay Area/ Nor. Cal & N. Santa Barbara

When Comcast acquired its Northern California markets from AT & T Broadband in 2002, most of the existing cable network lacked the bandwidth and advanced technology required to deliver cutting-edge services to local homes and businesses.  Although AT&T Broadband had already started rebuilding the network, they forecast that the project would not be finished for at least seven years.


In a startling move, Comcast accelerated the network upgrade to be finished in two years. By the end of 2004, Comcast had kept its promise. At a capital cost of $1.1 billion, the company upgraded more than 25,000 miles of cable, and introduced the digital age to millions of homes throughout Northern California. The newly-rebuilt Advanced Digital Network is the pipeline that makes it possible for Comcast to offer our full range of products and services including lightning-fast High-Speed Internet, video-on-demand, and Comcast Digital Voice.


In 2010, Comcast launched XFINITY. XFINITY represents the future of our company and it’s a promise to customers that we’ll keep innovating. We have rebranded our products: XFINITY TV, XFINITY Voice, XFINITY Internet, XFINITY Home, etc. XFINITY is about offering our customers more — more HD, more speed, more choice and more control over their services. Comcast has a long-standing tradition and strong commitment to improve the quality of life in local communities where our customers and employees live and work.  Comcast's continuing support of our local communities includes: financial support through Comcast Foundation grants and local marketing sponsorships, in-kind donations of products and services and a commitment of airtime for public service announcements.




Cable in the Classroom (CIC) -- As members of Cable in the Classroom, we provide complimentary cable and internet services to qualifying K-12 schools (includes all programs run by a County Office of Education and/or a School District). More than 3,300 schools receive complimentary services Our total yearly contribution is approximately $2.3 million dollars. Cable in the Classroom was established in Northern California over two decades ago bringing our grand total to over $50 million dollars. Comcast Cares Day -- Comcast Cares Day is Comcast and NBCUniversal’s signature celebration of service and the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer effort. Every spring, tens of thousands of our employees, families, friends and local partners join us to make a difference in the communities we serve. Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program -- Our signature scholarship program rewards young people for getting involved in their schools and making positive change in their communities. In recognition of their community service, academic achievement and leadership skills, winners receive a one-time scholarship of $1,000. Since 2001, Comcast has awarded $17.4 million in scholarships to more than 17,000 students across the country. In the 2011-12 school year, we awarded scholarships to nearly 1,900 students, with approximately 47 percent of the recipients from diverse backgrounds.  For more information, access the Leaders and Achievers website.


Hometown Heroes- The ‘Hometown Heroes’ partnership is between the Bay Area News Group and Comcast. The signature project aims to highlight people in the local community that are remarkable individuals, encourage volunteerism in the community, and raise visibility of nonprofits and key causes in the community. The ‘Hometown Hero’ Partnership is designed to recognize individuals in the Bay Area that are making a positive impact in our community, yet go unrecognized. Read more about Hometown Heroes at:


Comcast Community Partners- Comcast launched the Comcast Community Partners program to assist 501c3 non-profit organizations that supply vital services to our community with discounted Business Class Voice, Business Class Internet and Business Class TV services.  Comcast is always working to improve the quality of life in local communities where our customers and employees live and work, and the Comcast Community Partners program is a natural extension of our community investment efforts.  

This program gives 501c3 non-profit organizations in Comcast’s serviceable areas, technology solutions that save time, increase productivity and offer more value for less.  Our discount program gives nonprofit entities, including churches, the ability to have an even greater impact. Our everyday low price is not a promotional offering — it starts low and stays low.

Read Across America-- Comcast Partners with schools in their serviceable areas and gives every child a back pack full of new books to take home in partnership with the Accelerated Reader Program and Dr. Suess' birthday. Comcast has given away over 35,000 books in the last four years to the project.


Comcast 5th Grade Reading Challenge- Encouraging 5th grade classrooms across California to compete against each other and read minutes for a certain period of time during the year. The winning school of 5th graders who reads the most minutes gets $1000 dollars, the winning teacher gets $500 towards teaching materials and each student gets a $25 gift certificate to the local bookstore. Comcast has supported over 950,000 reading minutes towards this effort.


Comcast Hometown Network- Comcast Hometown Network ( is a regional cable network produced by Comcast and available in the San Francisco Bay Area and Central California on Digital Channel 104. Available to more than 2 million homes in Northern and Central California as a part of Comcast’s commitment to the communities that it serves, Comcast Hometown Network is a 24/7 channel that includes original regional programming, Comcast Hometown Sports (CHS), and unique local content that you can’t get anywhere else.


Comcast Hometown Network has quickly become one of the top destinations for local sports coverage. The network produces and televises LIVE minor league baseball games from the Class A Advanced California League, featuring the San Jose Giants, Stockton Ports, Modesto Nuts or Visalia Rawhide. In addition, CHN also televises Stockton Thunder hockey games and key high school football and basketball games featuring prominent prep programs throughout Northern and Central California.
